What Is Domain Age?

Domain age is the length of time that has passed since a domain name was first registered. This tool looks up that registration date — along with the date the record was last updated and when the registration is due to expire — using RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), the modern, standardized successor to WHOIS. The data comes straight from the domain's registry, so it's the same information you'd get from a manual WHOIS lookup, just faster and easier to read.

Does Domain Age Actually Affect SEO?

Short answer: not directly. Google's own engineers, including John Mueller, have repeatedly stated that domain age itself is not a ranking factor. A brand-new domain can outrank a 15-year-old one if its content and links are stronger. Be skeptical of any tool or guide that claims otherwise.

Where domain age does matter is indirectly. Older domains have simply had more time to accumulate the things that do influence rankings — backlinks, brand mentions, indexed content, and user trust signals. A checker like this one is more useful as a quick trust and due-diligence signal than as an SEO ranking hack:

Vetting a purchase

Before buying a domain or an established website, confirm how old it actually is — sellers sometimes round up.

Competitor research

See how long competitors have held their domain to understand how much time they've had to build authority.

Expiration monitoring

Check when a domain you're interested in (or one you own) is set to expire, so you don't lose it accidentally.

Trust signals

A domain registered decades ago and still active is a reasonable (though not foolproof) signal of a legitimate, ongoing business.

What Do the Result Columns Mean?

1

Created On

The date the domain was first registered with a registrar. This is what determines the domain's age.

2

Age

How long it's been since the domain was created, calculated from today's date.

3

Updated On

The last time the registration record itself changed — for example, a renewal, an ownership transfer, or a nameserver change. This is not the same as when the website's content last changed.

4

Expires On

The date the current registration period ends. If it isn't renewed by then, the domain typically enters a grace period before becoming available for anyone to register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool free?

Yes, completely free with no account or signup required. You can check up to 10 domains at once.

Where does the data come from?

We query RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) directly from the domain's registry — the same authoritative source behind WHOIS, but in a structured, standardized format.

Why can't I find data for some domains?

Some registries don't expose registration events over RDAP, some ccTLDs (country-code domains) use their own non-standard formats, and privacy-protected or very new domains can occasionally return incomplete data.

Is domain age the same as website age?

No. Domain age tracks the registration record, not the website. A domain can be decades old while the content on it changed hands or was rebuilt last month — and vice versa, a domain registered last month could host content migrated from a much older site.

Does an older domain rank higher on Google?

Not automatically. Google has stated domain age is not a direct ranking factor. Older domains often rank well because they've accumulated backlinks and content over time, not because of their age alone.
